Observe

Observe the following examples carefully. They are all from this module.

1. Many people were dying because they did not get to hospital quickly enough.

2. There were few doctors, so he had to work hard on his own.

3. He wrote books so that they could learn about how he treated the sick.

4. She’s my hero because she’s one of the best table tennis players in the world.

5. She trained hard, so she became a great player later.

6. He invented special medical tools to use outside hospitals and close to the fighting areas so that doctors could treat the wounded more quickly.

I 原因状语从句

如果从句表示的是主句行为的原因,就构成原因状语从句。原因状语从句由表示原因的连词引导,常用的是because。例如:

Mark is absent today because he is ill.

马可今天没来,因为他病了。

He failed the exam because he was too careless.

他太粗心了,所以没有通过考试。

Many people were dying because they did not get to hospital quickly enough.

很多人因为不能及时入院治疗而生命垂危。

注意: because 习惯上不能与 so 连用;

because引导的原因状语从句有时可以与带有because of 短语的句子互换。

Ⅱ 目的状语从句

如果从句表示的是主句行为的目的,该从句就是目的状语从句。目的状语从句可以由so that引导。例如:

Mulan dressed like a man so that she could join the army.

为了能够参军,木兰穿戴成男人的样子。

I got up very early so that I could get to school on time.

为了能按时到校,我很早就起床了。

Ⅲ 结果状语从句

本模块中我们接触的结果状语从句是由so引导的,表示“由于某个行为而导致的结果”。例如:

He worked too hard, so he fell ill again.

他工作过于劳累,结果又病倒了。

I. 用because, so或so that填空。

1. He became a scientist ______ he could study plants.

2. They played football every day _______ they wanted to become football players.

3. He wanted to be a good writer ______ he wrote for many hours every day.

4. The soldiers were fighting _______ they loved their country.

5. The soldiers were ill _______ he tried to help them.

6. She worked hard ________ she could become a doctor.

Now number the events in the order they happen.

a) Odysseus gets together with his wife and son.

b) Many of Odysseus’ friends are killed.

c) Odysseus and his friends fight in Troy.

d) Odysseus and his friends go to Troy.

e) There is a great storm on their way home.

Ⅱ. 同义句转换,每空一词。

1. My mother got to work, but she didn’t have breakfast.

My mother got to work _______ _______ breakfast.

2. Kate finished her homework on the computer at last.

Kate finished her homework on the computer _______ _______ _______.

3. The nine-year-old boy can look after himself.

The nine-year-old boy can ________ ________ _______ himself.

Ⅲ. 从方框中选择适当的句子完成对话,其中有一项多余。

A. Some pictures in which he is playing the piano with feet.

B. We can learn a lot from him.

C. What happened to the young man?

D. I think that a real hero must be brave and optimistic (乐观的).

E. I decided to write a story about the young pianist.

F. Is he the young man without arms, but plays the piano quite well?
