1.This style was created in the nineteenth century by an American poet.

in the nineteenth century意為「在19世紀」,相當於in the 1800s。

表示「在某世紀」時,用「in+the+序數詞+century」,表示「在某世紀某年代」時,用「in+the+數字+-s/-’s」。

【注意】用數字表示「某世紀」時,不要丟掉定冠詞the。

2.This kind of poem always talks about a single topic.

◆如果主詞是由「限定詞+kind/type/sort of+名詞」構成,隨後的動詞形式按以下規則:

(1)在a kind/sort/type of,this kind/sort/type of之後通常跟可數名詞單數或不可數名詞,動詞用單數形式。

【注意】在這種結構中,通常不用複數名詞。

(2)these kinds of,many/several kinds of之後,通常用複數名詞或不可數名詞,動詞都用複數形式。

◆single為形容詞,意為「單一的,單獨的」。

【拓展】a/one single+單數名詞=only one+單數名詞。

3.Each line has a set number of words.

a number of意為「一些」,與some或several同義,後面往往接可數名詞複數。 a number of片語作主詞時,謂語動詞往往用複數形式。句中的set是過去分詞起形容詞作用,意為「固定的,規定的」,修飾後面的名詞number。

【拓展】the number of意為「…的數目」,後接名詞複數。以the number of片語作主詞時,謂語動詞使用單數形式。

4.Let’s look at another two poems as examples.

another two poems意為「另外兩首詩」,與two more poems同義,「another+數詞+名詞複數」相當於「數詞+more+名詞複數」,表示「再幾個…」。
