1. At the beginning of the 20th century, the number of

tigers in the wild was around 100 000.

a number of…意思是「一些，若干」（= some），後面接著可數名詞複數或代名詞，謂語動詞用複數形式。也可以加入形容詞表示數量大或小等（例如：a large/small number of…許多/少數…）。

例：There are a large number of monkeys in the zoo .

動物園裡有很多猴子。

the number of…意思是“…的數字/數目”，介詞of同其後名詞構成介詞片語，修飾the number.當它作主詞時，謂語動詞用單數 。例：

The number of students is about twenty.

學生的數目大約二十。 Many people took part in 10,000-metre race, but only a number of them kept on running to the end .

很多人參加了1萬公尺賽跑，但是他們中只有一些人跑到了最後。

2. But today that number has dropped to a few thousand.

a few thousand表示「幾千」。當hundred, thousand前面是基數詞one, two, three…a few, many時，其後不加s。當hundred和thousand後面加上s時，需要跟著of修飾可數名詞複數。例：

There are three thousand students in our school.

我們學校有三千名學生。

Thousands of students are on the square.

成千上萬的學生在廣場上。
