Talk something about the pictures.

One of my favourite great books is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. The story is set in the town of St Petersburg, Missouri, in the US, in the nineteenth century.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book. It is more than an adventure story. Mark Twain wrote it in 1876.

Language practice

1. Their works are still read by many people today.

2. We’re still influenced by Confucius’s ideas.

3. It is still read and loved by people all over the world.

Compare the sentences below with the sentences in the grammar box above.

Grammar

被動語態(1)

如果想要表達“孩子們喜愛這本書”,“我們每天使用電腦”，我們會說：

兒童 love this book.

We use computers every day.

如果想要說“這本書為孩子們所喜愛”,“電腦天天都要使用到”，則可以這樣表達：

This book is loved by children.

Computers are used (by us) every day.

這兩組句子表達的重點有所不同。第一組句子專注於動作的發出者，強調某人做了什麼，而第二組句子則專注於動作的承受者，強調某事/某物如何。因此，當我們要突出某個行為的執行者時，應使用主動語態(第一組句子)來表達，而要強調動作的承受者時，就要使用被動語態(第二組句子)來表達。

一般現在式被動語態的各類句式總結如下：

1. 肯定句：主詞+am / is / are+動詞過去分詞(+by+動作執行者)

2. 否定句：主詞+ am / is / are not+動詞過去分詞(+by+動作執行者)

3. 一般疑問句：Am / Is / Are +主詞+動詞過去分詞(+by+動作執行者)

4. 特殊疑問句：特殊疑問詞+ am / is /are + 主詞+動詞過去分詞(+by+動作執行者)

e.g. This song is still loved by many young people today.

這首歌現在仍然受到許多年輕人的喜愛。 (肯定句)

This camera is not made in Japan.

這部相機不是日本製造的。 (否定句)

4. Make notes about why you agree or disagree with the statement.
