Language points

1. …looking after us was more than a full-time job.

…照顧我們比做一份全職工作還要辛苦.

這句話的主詞是動名詞片語looking after us。單一v-ing形式片語在句中作主詞時，謂語動詞要用單數。句中more than表示「不只是，多於」。例如：

He is more than a coach. He is a friend.

他不只是教練，更是朋友。

2. …what’s more, because I was a girl.

而且，我是個女孩。

what’s more表示遞進，「然而/還有… 」的意思，獨立使用，既可以放句首，也可以放句中，what’s more後面加逗號。

你應該記住它，更重要的是，應該正確理解它。

3. Generally speaking, I think life is better today.

總的說來，我認為今天的生活更好了。

generally speaking表示「一般而言，總的說來」。 in general也可以表達同樣的意思。例如：

Generally speaking, we enjoyed the trip.

總的說來，我們這趟旅行很愉快。

In general, women live longer than men.

總的說來，女性比男性更長壽。
