"Poor People" PPT Courseware 4
Leo Tolstoy
Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), a great Russian writer. He was born into a noble family and received a typical aristocratic education in his early years. He joined the army in 1851 and soon began to write the novel "Childhood". After retiring in 1856, he traveled abroad twice for inspection. Starting in 1863, he spent six years writing the masterpiece "War and Peace", and later wrote famous works such as "Anna Karenina" and "Resurrection". His works are majestic, with vast scenes, numerous characters, realistic and delicate psychological descriptions, and simple and refined language. They have a huge influence in the history of world literature.
think:
In what order is this article narrated?
What is the writing order?
This article is written in the order of development of events
The writing order of this article:
Waiting for the husband → to take the child back → to urge Sanna to take the child back
The first paragraph (verses 1 and 2): It tells the story of the night when there was a storm at sea, and Sanna was anxiously waiting for the return of her husband who went fishing at sea.
The second paragraph (verses 3-11): Sanna visited her sick neighbor Simon and found that Simon died of illness, so she took her two children back to her home.
The third paragraph (verses 12-27): It tells the story of a fisherman who came back from the sea and heard that Simon was dead, so he offered to take Simon’s child over and raise him.
1. Identify “poverty” from “food and clothing”
Sanna pondered: Her husband did not care about her body and went out to fish in the cold and storm. She herself worked from morning to night and could barely fill her stomach. The children had no shoes to wear and ran around barefoot in both winter and summer. They ate only black bread and only fish as food.
2. “Poverty” can be seen from “house decoration”
The ancient clock struck ten, eleven hoarsely...
The ellipses here indicate that the bells are still ringing. On the one hand, it highlights the tragic life of a fisherman who goes fishing at sea for the sake of his family's livelihood, regardless of body and risk, and cannot return home late at night. On the other hand, it also shows the anxiety of his wife Sanna who is worried about her husband's safety and looking forward to his safe return.
3. We can see “poverty” from “the busyness of Sanna and the fisherman”
My husband went out to sea in a small boat early in the morning and had not returned yet.
Her husband did not care about his health and went out to fish in cold weather and storms. She also worked from morning to night and could barely fill her stomach.
Oops, really bad! Nothing was hit, and the net was torn. Bad luck, bad luck! The weather is so awesome! I can't even remember a time when I had such a night, and there was no such thing as fishing! Thank God, I finally came back alive.
1. Read paragraphs 8-11 of the text silently and think: Draw the parts of the text that move you most and write down your own experiences.
1. Her heart was beating very fast. She didn’t know why she did this, but she felt she had to do it.
2. Sanna looked pale and looked excited. She thought uneasily: "What will he say? Is this a joke? His five children have been enough for him...Is he here?...No, Not here yet!...Why did you bring them here?...He will beat me! That's what I deserve, I'll bring it on myself....Well, just beat me up. !”
3. "No, no one! God, why should I do this?... What should I say to him now?..."
What would he say? Is this a joke? His five children were enough for him... Is he here? ...No, not yet! ...Why did you bring them here? ...He will beat me! That's what I deserve, I brought it upon myself... Well, you might as well give me a good beating!
1. What does the author’s extensive use of ellipses reflect about Sanna’s psychology? What does the ellipsis mean here?
2. What does self-inflicted crime mean? What does it mean that you would rather be beaten by your husband?
3. From Sanna’s uneasiness to her final decision, what kind of understanding do you have of Sanna?
2. Read paragraphs 12-27 of the text silently. Underline the sentences that move you while reading. Think about them while reading and write down your feelings in the blank spaces of the book.
1. The two were silent for a while.
2. "I don't know, it was probably yesterday. Alas! She died so miserably! The two children were beside her, asleep. They were so young...one couldn't speak yet, and the other I just learned how to crawl..." Sanna fell silent.
3. The fisherman frowned, his face became serious and worried. "Well, that's a problem!" He scratched the back of his head and said, "Well, what do you think we should do? We have to bring them here, how can we stay with the dead! Oh, we, we can always get through it! Go quickly! Don't Wait until they wake up.”
