1. Understand Western orchestras

A Western orchestra is a large band, often called a "symphony orchestra." It has a wide sound range, sharp timbre contrast, and extremely rich expressive power. It is usually used to play big music. It was introduced to our country in the 20th century.

The principles followed in the establishment of Western orchestras are:

1. Based on the principle of sound balance. 2. It must be scientific, reasonable and applicable.

Although there are many instruments used in the orchestra, the entire orchestra can be divided into four groups based on the structure, performance and playing methods of the instruments:

Woodwind section: flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bassoon

Brass Section: Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, French Horn

String Instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

Percussion group: timpani, cymbals, bass drum, snare drum, triangle, gong, celesta, xylophone

"Youth Orchestra Guide" music introduction:

"Young People's Guide to Orchestras" is a work written by British composer Britten in 1945 specifically for young people to understand Western orchestral music. The music is based on a theme from Purcell's "Abderazi" and contains thirteen variations, each of which focuses on an instrument or a group of instruments.

Part One: Purcell Theme.

1. How many times does Purcell’s theme appear in this piece of music? What instruments are played by?

2. Discuss the emotions expressed in Purcell’s theme section.

3. Model singing Purcell’s theme.

Part Two: Variations on Purcell's Theme

(1) Listen to Variation 1 of Purcell's theme and think about which instrument of which instrument group is this theme played?

(2) Analyze how this theme is related to Purcell’s theme? Introduce the concept of variation.

Part Three: Fugue

A brief introduction to fugue.

Fugue originated from polyphonic vocal music at the end of the 15th century, and later appeared in instrumental music creation. It is the most complex and rigorous form in polyphonic music.

Listen to the fugue and talk about how you feel.

In conclusion

Variation 2: Oboe. The sweet and soft tone and beautiful melody make the variations quiet and elegant.

Change three: clarinet, dance music, light and bright melody

Change four: Bassoon. A low tone with a humorous tone.

Change Five: Violin, elegant, polonaise soft and bright

Change Six: Viola, soft and cantabile

Change Seven: Cello, waltz rhythm, using a lot of syncopated rhythms, intimate and touching.

Change Eight: The double bass plays both lively staccato and lyrical melody.

Change 9: Harp, using arpeggios, glissando and other techniques to play various colorful phrases.

Change ten: French horn, brilliant colors

Change to Eleven: Trumpet, a fast march, reminiscent of the light cavalry passing by, accompanied by the snare drum, which is exciting

Change twelve: trombone and euphonium, horn-like melody, solemn and firm

Change Thirteen: Percussion instruments, lively and interesting

Meet the composer

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), British composer. Started studying music at an early age. In 1930, he entered the Royal Academy of Music in London to study piano and composition. From 1935 to 1939, he mainly composed music for radio broadcasts, dramas and films. Went to the United States in 1939. After returning to China in 1942, he performed as a pianist across the UK and continued to compose music.
