Get to know the author

Feng Zikai (1898─1975) modern writer, painter, and literary translator. A native of Chongde, Zhejiang. In 1914, he entered the First Normal School of Zhejiang Province and studied music and painting under Li Shutong. He graduated in 1919. In 1921, he studied in Japan. After returning to China in 1922, he taught at Chunhui Middle School in Shangyu, Zhejiang. In 1925, he published the first picture book "Zikai Comics", which was the first comic book in China. In 1931, the collection of essays "Yuanyuantang Essays" was published. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, he taught in Zhejiang, Chongqing and other places, and later engaged in creation at home. After liberation, he served as chairman of the Chinese Artists Association and other positions. His works include "Essays of Yuanyuantang", "Rewriting of Yuanyuantang", "Train Car Society", "Collection of Frankness", and "Collection of Modern Prose by Zikai". The main translations include Turgenev's "A Hunter's Notes" and the Japanese classic "The Tale of Genji".

His prose is straightforward, simple, quiet, and mysterious. It not only contains the contrast between the distance between people and the innocence of children, but also often contains Buddhist concepts. Due to the influence of Feng Zikai's experience and his teacher Li Shutong, the thoughts of worldliness and worldliness are often intertwined in Feng Zikai's works. Generally speaking, you can feel a tranquil Zen flavor when reading his prose. Understand Feng Zikai’s life and his thoughts of “resigning oneself to fate”. To pave the way for understanding the meaning in the article of "it comes at a moment's notice" and "you will not convert to it for the rest of your life".

Read the text freely and think while reading:

(1) What does this article express your love for? Why? Is it expressing emotions through scenes or objects?

This article expresses my love for willow, because it is simple and unpretentious, willing to give, and never forgets its roots.

Borrowing things to express emotions

(2) From what angles does the author write about his love for it?

Three angles.

①Have an accidental relationship with willow.

②The morphological beauty of willows (external beauty).

③The inner beauty of willow (simple, unpretentious, not asking for anything, not forgetting the roots).

Two angles. ① My relationship with Yang Liu (random) ② Praise for Yang Liu’s ordinary selflessness.

Discuss in each group to clarify the structure of the article

Part One (Natural Sections 1-2): I have an accidental relationship with Yangliu.

Part Two (Natural Section 3-4): The morphological beauty of willow (external beauty).

The third part (Natural paragraphs 5-8): The inner beauty of willow (simple, unpretentious, not asking for anything, not forgetting the roots).

Study Part 2

(1) Ziwei Lang’s crape myrtle flowers

The words come from Bai Juyi's poem "Zhi Zhong Shu Sheng": "Your Excellency Silun's articles are quiet, and the carvings in the bell and drum towers are long. Who is your companion when you sit alone at dusk? The crape myrtle flower versus the crape myrtle."

(2) The red apricot that once made Shangshu famous

The words come from "Spring in the Jade House" written by Song Qi in the Song Dynasty. Song Qi's sentence "The morning is light and cold outside the green poplar smoke, and the spring breeze is on the red apricot branches" is the most expressive. People at the time called it "The spring breeze on the red apricot branches is stirring up the ministers".

(3) The peony that once made a beautiful woman drunk

The words come from the 62nd chapter of "Dream of Red Mansions", "Han Xiangyun is drunk and sleeps with peony fungus".

Study Part Three

This part still uses the comparison method.

(1) Discuss paragraph 5. The author compares willow with something to show willow's tenacious vitality and non-asking spirit.

Compare it with "Peony flowers need pig intestines, grapevines need broth, and many flowers and trees need bean cakes."

(2) Discuss paragraph 6. The author compares the drooping of willows with the upward development of flowers and trees. What character does the author praise of willows?

When praising willow, he never forgets his roots and always looks down at the valuable character below.

(3) Discuss paragraph 7. The author writes, "The only thing that best symbolizes the divine will of spring is the weeping poplar." Why?

The "drooping" of the willow reflects humility. It understands that the earth is the source of its life, so it "talls up without forgetting its roots" and best symbolizes the divine will of spring.

(4) What role does paragraph 8 play in the structure of the full text?

Echo the beginning and deepen the theme.

Summarize
