Regular changes in comparative (-er) and superlative (-est) forms of monosyllable and some two-syllable adjectives.
1. Usually add er/est directly at the end of the word: tall—taller—tallest
2. For words ending in e, add er/est to e: wide—wider—widest
3. For words ending with a consonant plus y, change y to i and add er/est: busy—busier—busiest
4. For words that end with a stressed closed syllable and have only one consonant at the end, double the consonant at the end and add er/est:
big—bigger—biggest, (fat, thin, red, hot)
