Peng Duanshu (about 1699-about 1779), whose courtesy name was Lezhai and whose name was Yiyi, was from Danling, Sichuan. He was a famous litterateur in Sichuan during the Qing Dynasty. Together with Li Tiaoyuan and Zhang Wentao, he was known as the three talented men in Sichuan during the Qing Dynasty. He, his younger brothers Peng Zhaozhu and Peng Zunzhuang swam at the foot of Ziyun Mountain and "became teachers and friends", and they studied hard as classmates for six years. His later achievements were not due to innate talent, but mainly to his acquired hard work and diligent study. He was a Jinshi in the Yongzheng period and served as a doctor in the Ministry of Civil Affairs and a co-examiner in the Shuntian Township Examination. After resigning, he returned to Sichuan and lectured at Jinjiang Academy.

The Second Monk of Shu PPT, Part Six: Writing Method

Use stories as metaphors to illustrate determination. The full text basically narrates the story of two monks from Shu. This is a vivid metaphor. "It's thousands of miles from Western Shu to the South China Sea." It can be seen that it was quite difficult to go to the South China Sea at that time. The rich "have been trying to buy a boat for several years, but have not been able to do so." It is of course much easier to buy a boat and travel down the mountain than to cross mountains and rivers, but he is just "desire" and stays on the wish, but is afraid to move forward and does not take action. The wish is just a wish.

In his mind, there are only objective conditions and no subjective initiative. He can do nothing. He also concludes with a mocking tone that even the poor cannot move forward. And the poor man only had "one bottle and one bowl", which showed his arduous fighting spirit, his fearless strong will in the face of difficulties, and his firm confidence in realizing his lofty ambitions. For the following "The poor returned from the South China Sea" was a foreshadowing.

The rich man laughed at the poor man's answer, showing his self-righteous arrogance and prejudice very clearly. This passage ends here. The following does not record the poor man's rebuttal, but answers with facts. The facts fully reflect the poor man's firm will regardless of ridicule. As for the journey towards the South China Sea, the dialogue between the poor man and his wife after his return is briefly mentioned, giving people plenty of room for imagination.
