It is said that Boya and Zhong Ziqi were from the Spring and Autumn Period. Regarding the legend that they became bosom friends, Feng Menglong in "Lü Shi Chun Qiu" and "Lieh Zi" wrote "Yu Boya Throws His Qin to Thank His Bosom friend" based on this legend, which was collected in "Warning to the World" middle.
Because of this legend, people call people who truly understand them a "bosom friend" and use "high mountains and flowing water" to describe a friend who is hard to find or whose music is wonderful.
Approaching Boya
There are many records about Boya in the literature of the past dynasties. The earliest one can be seen in Xun Kuang's "Encouragement to Learning": "In the past, the gour (hù) played the harp, and the sunken fish came out to listen; Boya played the harp, and the six horses raised their heads." Use exaggerated techniques to express the vividness and beauty of his music performance. Boya was very smart and talented since he was a child, and he also loved music. His teacher was Chenglian, a well-known luthier at that time.
Boya: Ming Rui, Boya is his given name. He was a native of Yingdu, Chu State (now Jingzhou, Hubei Province) during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. He was a senior official in the Jin State and a famous luther master in the Spring and Autumn Period. He was revered as the "Qin Immortal".
