Part 1: Introduction to the author

Cao Yu (1910-1996), formerly known as Wan Jiabao, is an outstanding playwright and "master of contemporary language arts" in my country. In 1933, he published his debut novel "Thunderstorm" in "Literary Quarterly" and became famous instantly. After that, he successively created "Sunrise" (1935) and "The Wilderness" (1937), thus establishing his status as a master in the Chinese drama circle. "Thunderstorm" is a touching tragedy. The script is set in China's semi-feudal and semi-colonial society in the 1920s. It artistically reflects the decadence of the reactionary bourgeoisie through various entanglements within the family of Zhou Puyuan, a capitalist with a strong feudal flavor, and the intricate conflicts between the Zhou and Lu families. , corrupt life, exposed the selfish and hypocritical morality of the bourgeoisie, violently attacked the dark and decadent social system of old China, and demonstrated the historical destiny of the inevitable collapse of the old system.
