Part One: Introduction to the Poet

Tao Yuanming (365-427) was a Chinese writer in the Jin and Song Dynasties, known as Mr. Jingjie. A potential person with bright characters. A native of Chaisang, Xunyang (now southwest of Jiujiang, Jiangxi). Tao Yuanming was born in a declining official family. Due to the contradictory nature of Confucianism and Taoism, officials sometimes disappeared and were indecisive. In the later period (after the age of 41), Tao Yuanming was extremely dissatisfied with reality due to the turmoil of the current situation, the perilous career path, political corruption in the officialdom, and the strict clan system. He resolutely resigned and went into seclusion, completely breaking away from the officialdom. Tao Yuanming's creations include two parts: poetry and articles, and his later poetry has the highest achievements.

The story of five buckets of rice

One day in August of the first year of Yixi (405), Tao Yuanming, who was the magistrate of Pengze County, heard that the county had sent governors (supervising officials from various places on behalf of the prefect) to inspect the county. The county official advised him to dress neatly in official uniform and go to meet the governor. Tao Yuanming hated those officials who pretended to be powerful and extorted money in the name of postal supervision. He said angrily: "I will never bend my waist for five buckets of rice (referring to salary) to welcome and serve such a country villain." He reasoned that he was in Wuchang. His sister died of illness and he had to go to the funeral; Pengze County Magistrate, who had only served as magistrate for more than eighty days, resigned from his post and returned to his fields.

farm life

During this period, Tao Yuanming relied on labor to survive. In addition to plowing and irrigating the fields, he also weaved mats, made straw sandals, and sold vegetables. Because the farmland is often plagued by floods, droughts, and insects, and the government forces rents and taxes, Tao Yuanming's family still lives in extreme hardship. Sometimes they are in the predicament of "being hungry in summer and sleepless in cold nights." Although life is difficult, he sticks to his poverty and does not change his original intention. Once, Tan Daoji, the governor of Jiangzhou, came to visit. Tao Yuanming had been unable to open the pot for several days and was so hungry that it was difficult to get up. Tan Daoji persuaded him to enter the official career again, but Tao Yuanming still politely declined and refused to accept the rice and meat sent by Tan Daoji.

Three poems PPT, the second part: analysis of poems

Return to the garden and live in the fields

There is little common sense, and one’s nature is to love hills and mountains. Lost in the dust net by mistake, gone for thirty years

The birds in the pond are nostalgic for the old forest, and the fish in the pond are thinking about the old abyss. Open up the wilderness in the south, stay humble and return to the garden.

The square house covers more than ten acres and has eight or nine thatched houses. The elms and willows shade the back eaves, and the peach and plum trees in front of the hall.

The distant village is warm, and the smoke in the ruins is still there. Dogs bark in the deep alleys, cocks crow in the mulberry trees.

The courtyard is free of dust and clutter, and the empty room has plenty of leisure. After being in a cage for a long time, you can return to nature.

Suitable: adapt to, cater to. Rhyme: temperament, nature. Bird in a cage: a bird in a cage.

Clumsy: foolish. Shade: cover. Warm: dim, blurry.

Yiyi: rising gently and slowly. market: market

Nature: It can be understood as both nature and pastoral life.

Explanation of key words

Rhyme: temperament, character.

Qiushan: mountains and forests, generally refers to nature.

Three poems PPT, content of the sixth part: Summary:

In this poem, what we come into contact with is not the unrelated square houses, elms, willows, peaches and plums, the village in the evening, the smoke in the ruins, the barking of dogs in the deep lanes, and the crowing of cocks in the mulberry trees. The specific scenery constitutes a tranquil, simple and natural artistic conception, which makes people deeply appreciate the author's indifferent and tranquil life, and truly achieves the perfect artistic realm of blending scenes.

Summary of artistic techniques of poetry

1. Use metaphors, contrasts, puns, etc. skillfully.

2. Use line drawing techniques to describe scenery, blending emotions into the scenery.

"Light of Humanity" by Tao Shi

Don’t indulge in material desires and advocate spirituality.

Don't bend your eyebrows and bend your waist, and stick to your integrity.

Don't follow the crowd, stick to your true nature.
