Part 1: Introduction to the author
Tao Yuanming (365-427), whose courtesy name was Yuanliang, also known as Qian and whose courtesy name was Yuanming, was born in Chaisang, Xunyang, Jin Dynasty (now Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province). His great-grandfather had served as an official to the rank of Grand Sima, but by the time he arrived, his family was in decline. In his youth, he had the ambition to "help the common people". However, the situation in the Eastern Jin Dynasty was turbulent and the politics was dark. Tao did not become an official until he was 29 years old, and soon returned to seclusion. Later, he sometimes disappeared and sometimes became an official. It was not until the age of 41 that he completely abandoned his official position and returned to seclusion.
He is the most outstanding poet in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. There are 125 poems that have been handed down to this day. Most of his works describe his life after retirement, express rural scenery and working life, and express his dissatisfaction with the dark reality. His poems have real emotions, plain and natural style, mellow poetic flavor and fresh language, which have a great influence on later generations. It created the unity of pastoral poetry and opened up a new realm for classical poetry.
