Xu Guangyao was born in Xiongxian County, Hebei Province. In 1938, he joined the Eighth Route Army at the age of 13 and wrote some frontline news and combat communications. In 1947, he entered the Literature Department of North China United University to study. He has published short stories in "Jizhong Herald" under the pseudonym Yue Feng. During the War of Liberation, he served as editor and reporter of military newspapers.

In 1950, he completed his first novel "Fire on the Plains", which successfully portrayed the heroic image of guerrilla leader Zhou Tiehan and truly represented the people's struggle against the enemy in the base areas behind enemy lines in central Hebei during the Anti-Japanese War. In 1951, he studied at the Central Institute of Literature. In 1952, he interrupted his studies and went to the Korean front. Later, he returned to his hometown to do grassroots work. In 1955, he was transferred to the creative office of the Ministry of General Affairs and Culture of the People's Liberation Army as a creative staff member. The anti-rightists were mistakenly classified as rightists. In 1959, he served as editor of the Baoding Federation of Literary and Art Circles and wrote the excellent novella "Little Soldier Zhang Ga", which depicts the story of the young anti-Japanese heroes in Baiyangdian who grew up in the war.
