Fan Zhongyan, courtesy name Xiwen. He has been guarding the border in Shaanxi for many years. Politically, he advocated innovation but was obstructed by the conservatives. His poems about life on the frontier are desolate and tragic, generous and sad; about life in exile, they are touching and profound, and are very popular. Fan Zhongyan served as deputy economic envoy of Shaanxi Province in the first year of Kangding reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty. He guarded the border for four years and composed several songs of "The Proud Fisherman". After Xixia Hao became emperor in 1038, he invaded the Song Dynasty in successive years. Due to poverty, weakness and empty border defenses, the Song army was defeated by Yanzhou, then by Haoshuichuan, and three times by Dingchuan Village. In 1040, Fan Zhongyan was appointed deputy economic envoy of Shaanxi from Yuezhou and also knew Yanzhou (today's Yan'an, Shaanxi). Yanzhou was the strategic point of entry and exit for Xixia. After the war, all the city walls were burned and looted, and the garrison troops were scattered throughout the city without any barriers. This word may have been written in Yanzhou. There are several original lines, all of which start with "Autumn comes under the barrier", which Ouyang Xiu once called "a poem outside the barrier". But this is the only word that has been passed down to this day.
