I feel very happy when I see everyone in high spirits! I have a very good impression of you all. I am very happy to have such an opportunity to study with you. I hope we have a happy study and cooperation today! Today, before studying, I first tell the students a story about how a Christmas gift creates a great writer. In 1899, when Christmas was approaching, a prisoner in Columbus Prison in the United States was worried and in pain because he had no money to buy a Christmas gift for his beloved daughter. He was thinking hard, how could he make money? Suddenly, he remembered that in a magazine he had run before, he had received generous remuneration for writing some humorous sketches and interesting stories.
About the Author
O. Henry (1862-1910) was a famous American short story writer. Born in a family of doctors in North Carolina, USA. His life experience is very rich. His mother died when he was young. He entered the society at the age of 15 and worked as a pharmacy apprentice, a shepherd, an accountant and a bank teller. He was later accused of embezzling public funds. To avoid trial, he left his home and wandered. Later, because his wife was seriously ill, he ventured home and was arrested and imprisoned. The years of poverty, wandering life, confinement in prison, and contact with various characters greatly enriched his creative themes. So, while in prison, he began to write short stories under the pen name "O. Henry". He wrote more than 300 short stories and one novel in his life. His representative works include "The Gift of the Magi", "The Police and the Hymn", and "The Last Vine Leaf". His works use a relaxed and humorous tone to describe the unfortunate fate and beautiful qualities of small people in big cities, exposing the shamelessness, tyranny and corruption of the upper class. Artistically proficient in conception, the stories often have twists and turns and unexpected endings, which make people endlessly memorable.
The text is arranged in chronological order, with Della as the center of the narrative, and can be divided into three parts:
