1. Ancient counting methods.

Question: In ancient times, people gradually had the need to count during production work. Do you know how they count?

(1) Use physical objects to count.

When people in ancient times were grazing, they needed to record how many sheep were herded. Each sheep corresponded to a small stone, and as many small stones were placed as there were sheep. When you come back from grazing, match the pebbles with the sheep one by one. If the number of sheep is the same as the number of pebbles, it means that the sheep were not lost during the grazing.

(2) Knotting and counting.

"Knotting" is the most commonly used counting method by people in ancient times. The so-called "knotting" is to count the number of objects by tying knots. When all the knots on the rope were untied, the war should end.

(3) Carve the number.

In addition to the two methods of "counting with physical objects" and "counting with knots", people in ancient times also used the method of "counting with engravings" to count. The number of fish caught is counted by carving marks on stone or wood with a sharp tool, with each mark representing a fish.

2. Counting symbols.
