"Tang Xuanzang's Journey to the West to Collect Buddhist Scriptures" PPT courseware
Xuanzang, known as Tripitaka of the Tang Dynasty, with a common surname of Chen, was born in Yanshi, Henan. He was born in the second year of Renshou (602), Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty, and passed away in the first year of Linde, Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty (664). In the third year of Zhenguan (629), Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, he set out from Chang'an to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures. Xuanzang was twenty-eight years old at that time. The government at that time explicitly prohibited people from leaving the country privately, and inspections at major road passes were very strict. However, Xuanzang was determined and finally managed to sneak out of the country. Passing through Gansu, Xinjiang, crossing the Tianshan Mountains, the Pamir Plateau, passing through Afghanistan, Pakistan, and finally reaching India.
Xuanzang returned to Chang'an with a reputation that was famous in India, and was greeted by hundreds of thousands of people. Xuanzang's journey to the west to seek Dharma took a total of seventeen years and a journey of 50,000 miles.
