Types of snails

The basic form of snail (1)

Shell: There is a hard shell outside the body of the snail; the shell is spirally divided into layers, getting larger regularly from the top to the bottom, and comes in various colors and patterns. The entire body is long and conical (the tail end is slightly tapered), flexible, and is hidden in the shell when resting.

Head: The head has a mouth, eyes and antennae.

Mouth: The mouth is located at the lower front of the head.

Tentacles: There are two tentacles in front of the head. The smaller one is called the precontactor, which can detect soil and food and has a tactile function; the longer and thicker one is called the metacontactor.

Snails are gastropods, and their abdomens are their feet. They crawl by peristalsis of their abdominal muscles. Put the snail in the palm of your hand and you will feel like it is being sucked up.

When a snail is moving, its body will secrete a sticky liquid to moisten its abdomen and feet, so that they will not be injured by rough and sharp things, and it can also help them grasp objects. The snail relies on this mucus to slowly move towards the snail. It can climb forward and climb up and down tree trunks and walls.

According to scientists, the fastest speed a snail can crawl is about 12.2 meters/hour. Nowadays, people often use the metaphor of snail crawling to describe a slow speed.
