Part One: Roman City-State

According to legend, the founders of the city of Rome were twin brothers Romulus and Remus. Their mother was the daughter of a king. Her uncle usurped the throne and had the twin brothers she gave birth to thrown into the Tiber River. Two children are washed up on a river bank, where a she-wolf takes care of them. Later, a shepherd couple adopted them. When the two brothers grew up, they learned of their origins and worked together to kill the usurper, restore the throne, and build a new city. Later, the new city was named "Rome".

Roman Republic:

In 509 BC, Rome established a republic; the People's Assembly was the formal highest authority; decision-making power was in the hands of the Senate, composed of 300 nobles; two consuls with equal power presided over daily government affairs. (Two additional tribunes)

"The Twelve Tables of Bronze":

Time: 450 BC to 449 BC

Content: Involving litigation procedures, ownership and debt rights, religious law, criminal law, civil law, etc.

Significance: The "Law of the Twelve Tables" provided a written basis for sentencing and conviction, and to a certain extent curbed the nobles' misinterpretation and abuse of the law. It was an important milestone in the development of Roman law.

Expansion of the Roman Republic:

Early 3rd century BC: Conquered the Italian Peninsula, defeated Carthage, and controlled the Western Mediterranean;

2nd century BC: Conquered the Eastern Mediterranean and became the overlord of the Mediterranean

The birth and development of the Roman Empire:

49 BC: Caesar takes control of the Senate and becomes dictator for life;

31 BC: Octavian pioneered the "Principal System" and assumed the highest power of governance;

27 BC: The Roman Republic evolved into the Roman Empire;

2nd century AD: The Roman Empire entered its golden age.

3rd century AD: The Roman Empire fell into a long-term political and economic crisis;

375 AD: The Germans began to invade the Roman Empire;

At the end of the 4th century AD: the Roman Empire split into two empires, the East and West;

476 AD: The Western Roman Empire fell.
