"Qu Yuan" was written in Chongqing in January 1942. This was the stalemate stage of the Anti-Japanese War, and it was also an extremely dark time for the Kuomintang's reactionary rule. Half of the country fell to the enemy. The Chiang Kai-shek clique passively resisted Japan and brazenly launched the "Southern Anhui Incident", massacring the patriotic and anti-Japanese soldiers and civilians, setting off an anti-communist upsurge. Faced with such political reality, Guo Moruo was filled with righteous indignation and wrote "Qu Yuan" to criticize the dark rule of the Kuomintang reactionaries.

The whole play of "Qu Yuan" is divided into five acts: "Ode to Orange", "Framed", "Calling the Soul", "Imprisoned" and "Ode to Thunder". Although it only writes one day's life experience of Qu Yuan, it has a high degree of historical generalization.
