Properties of parallelograms

Property 1: Opposite sides of a parallelogram are parallel and equal.

Example teaching

In parallelogram ABCD, given ∠A=52 °, find the measures of the remaining three angles.

Solution: ∵ Quadrilateral ABCD is a parallelogram

And ∠A=52° (known)

∴ ∠A=∠C=52° (opposite angles of a parallelogram are equal)

Also ∵AD∥BC (opposite sides of a parallelogram are parallel)

∴∠A+∠B=180° (two straight lines are parallel and the interior angles on the same side are complementary)

∴∠B=∠D= 180 °－∠A= 180º－ 52°=128 °

It is known that the perimeter of parallelogram ABCD is equal to 20 cm, AC=7 cm, find the perimeter of △ABC.

∵ Quadrilateral ABCD is a parallelogram (known)

∴ AB=CD, BC=AD (opposite sides of the parallelogram are equal)

That is, AB+BC=1/2C ABCD =10cm

And ∵ AC=7 cm (known)

∴ C△ ABC=AB+BC+AC=10+7=17 (cm)
