Asia is the abbreviation of Asia, which means "the land of the rising sun in the east". In the mid-2000 BC, the Phoenicians rose up on the east coast of the Mediterranean (today's Syria) and established a powerful Phoenician kingdom. They had superb navigation skills and were active throughout the Mediterranean. Frequent maritime activities required the Phoenicians to determine their orientation. Therefore, they called the land east of the Mediterranean Sea "Asu", which means "the place where the sun rises in the east". "Asia" evolved from the Phoenician "Asu" and is transliterated as "Asia", referred to as Asia.
