Grammatical analysis
The verb infinitive is a type of non-predicate verb. It has no changes in person or number. The verb infinitive has the characteristics of nouns, adjectives and adverbs. It can be used as subject, object, predicate, attributive, adverbial, object complement, etc. in a sentence. , but cannot be used as a predicate.
1. Structure
Basic structure: to + verb base form, sometimes the infinitive symbol to can be omitted.
Negative form: not to + base form of verb.
Infinitives have forms and voice changes, and usually have several forms in the following table (take do as an example):
2. Verb infinitive as attributive
Infinitives and their phrases are used as attributives, just like other phrases used as attributives. They are generally placed after the word being modified. They usually indicate a future action, and sometimes they can also indicate a specific action in the past.
There is a certain logical relationship between the attributive form of the verb and the word being modified. There are three common types of these relationships.
1. The infinitive has a logical verb-object relationship with the noun or pronoun being modified.
He told me he had a composition to write. He told me he had a composition to write.
I want to get something to drink. I want to get something to drink.
From the above examples, we know that the infinitive at this time must be a transitive verb. If it is an intransitive verb, it is followed by a preposition required for structure or meaning. like:
Will you please bring me a chair to sit in? Please bring me a chair to sit in?
She has nothing to worry about. She has nothing to worry about.
2. The infinitive has a logical subject-predicate relationship with the noun or indefinite pronoun being modified. like:
He was the last one to arrive.
He was the last one to arrive.
Is there anyone to take care of the children?
Is there anyone to take care of this child?
The logical subjects of the infinitive actions in the example sentences are one and anyone respectively. The infinitive at this time is equivalent to an attributive clause in meaning. like:
Among the men to take part in the work (=Among the men who are to take part in the work), he is probably the most active.
Of those who participated in this work, he was probably the most active.
3. The word modified by the infinitive is usually used in meaning to do something that the infinitive does. like:
We have got a new way to kill field mice.
We found a way to kill voles.
I think he will have a chance to go to his hometown.
I think he has a chance to go to his hometown.
It can be seen that way is used to kill field mice, and chance is used to go to his hometown. Therefore, this type of infinitive translation is more flexible and can be translated as "... of" or "come/go..." etc. like:
She has no time to see the film. She has no time to see the film.
