Part One: Transparency and Luster of Minerals

What is the light transmission of the following papers? How can we describe the light transmission of these papers?

Activity 1: Use a flashlight to illuminate transparent paper, translucent paper, and opaque paper respectively.

Activity 2: Look at the words under the paper through these three types of paper.

Tell me about your understanding of transparency, translucency and opacity.

We can measure the transparency of a mineral by looking at the edges of its fragments to see if other objects are visible.

Transparency: Another object can be seen through the edge of a mineral fragment.

Translucency The blurring of another object seen through the edge of a mineral fragment.

Opaque The complete inability to see another object through the edges of a mineral fragment.

When light hits a mineral surface, it reflects and refracts. Luster refers to how well a mineral surface reflects light. The description of mineral luster is based on specific objects as references.

Mineral luster can be divided into the following situations:

Metallic luster Semi-metallic luster Non-metallic luster

Some minerals have special regular geometric shapes. They are all crystals of minerals, and it is easy to distinguish them.

How do we describe the shapes of these minerals?

Mineral forms in nature are diverse, and the minerals we see are more often in irregular blocks (the mineral crystals are so small and tightly packed that they cannot be distinguished by the naked eye).

Crystals of the same mineral sometimes have different shapes. This is due to the different environments and conditions in which minerals are generated.
