Mao Dun (1896-1981), whose original name was Shen Dehong, also named Yan Bing, was a native of Tongxiang, Zhejiang. In 1913, he was admitted to the preparatory course of Peking University and graduated in 1916. He began literary activities in 1920 and published his first novella "Disillusionment" in 1927.
