scanning

Scanning refers to reading that uses questions as clues to find specific information.

It is very important to use what words as positioning words (or clue words) to search in the original text.

Commonly used positioning words for scanning include:

(1)Numbers and years

(2) Proper nouns such as names of persons and places appearing for the first time

(3) Characteristics or comparative relationships of things

(4) New information in the question stem that is different from other questions. The form of these positioning words in the original text and the form in the question stem may change, so students should pay attention.

Ⅲ. Appreciation of sentence patterns

1. Time adverbial clause

①Virtual choir members record themselves while they perform alone on video.

②He fell in love with Mozart’s classical music when he sang for the university choir.

2. Attributive clause

①As one virtual choir member said, “Music helps me to...forget my problems. With music, I become someone else.”

②In 2009, Whitacre received a video of a girl who was singing one of his works.

3. Past participle phrases as adverbials

①Born in the USA on 2 January 1970, Whitacre began studying music at the University of Nevada in 1988.

②Moved by this music, he said, “It was like seeing color for the first time.”

4. Use noun phrases as appositives

His first virtual choir, “Lux Aurumque”, had 185 singers from 12 different countries.
