1. Haydn’s life

Franz Joseph Haydn

1732-1809 (77 years old)

1. Childhood:

Haydn was born in a small town in eastern Austria on the Austro-Hungarian border.

Austrians, Hungarians, Slovaks and Croats gathered there.

The multi-ethnic folk music of his hometown exerted a subtle influence on his later creations.

Haydn's father was a wheelwright.

Haydn studied with an uncle when he was 6 years old.

At the age of 8, he became a singer in the Vienna church choir.

After Haydn changed his voice, he began to make a living by teaching and temporary jobs. He taught himself harpsichord, violin and counterpoint. He once studied composition with an Italian composer.

Haydn is honored as: "the father of the symphony" and "the father of the string quartet".

Neither the symphony nor the string quartet were pioneered by Haydn;

However, these two forms of instrumental music entered a mature stage in Haydn's research and creation.

3. Appreciation of Haydn’s classic works

Example 1: "Surprise" Symphony

In 1791, Haydn went to London to perform his works for the first time. He found that some ladies were absent-minded during the concert, so he made a joke with them in the "Symphony in G Major":

The slow variation theme of the second movement was played very softly, and the sound was even softer when the theme was repeated. The ladies all fell asleep in the unusually quiet music...

Suddenly, the band played a strong chord with the beating of timpani, which was like a bolt from the blue, startling the sleepy ladies. Therefore, it is called "Symphony of Surprise".

Example 2: "Serenade"

Also known as "Andante Cantabile" String Quartet, composed around 1762

Originally composed for "String Quartet No. 17 in F major"

orchestral music

Violin music

Guitar music etc.

The original piece is performed by a string quartet.

The serenade melody played by the first violin with a mute is smooth and intimate, full of joyful emotions.

The other three parts are played by the second violin, viola, and cello using pizzicato to create the effect of guitar accompaniment.

This serenade has bright colors, brisk strolling rhythm and melodious melody. It has an elegant and simple mood and expresses a carefree artistic conception.

During the development of the melody, there are sometimes extremely natural large jump intervals, making the tune more lively.
