Description
"Motherland" "Black People Talk about Rivers" PPT courseware 2
About the Author
Lermontov, the great Russian poet of the 19th century, is recognized as Pushkin's worthy successor.
He showed artistic talent very early, and was an upright and kind-hearted man. Although he was born into a noble family, he ideologically stood with the revolutionary Decembrists and issued an angry protest against the dark serfdom society. Because of this, he experienced the hardships of exile during his lifetime, and finally died in a duel plotted by the Tsarist henchmen.
Lermontov put forward his "strange love" for the motherland, regarding the beautiful land and hard-working people of the motherland as the true connotation of the concept of the motherland, showing his strong desire to understand and get close to the people and share weal and woe.
Poetry Appreciation
1. Which sentence governs the entire text?
"I love my motherland, but with a strange love"
2. Where is the strangeness?
"Neither the glory bought with blood, nor the tranquility filled with proud piety, nor the sacred rumors of ancient times, can stir up the dream of consolation in my heart.
Several sentences expressing concession emphasize that the poet's "love" for the motherland is irreplaceable.
What are the characteristics of the images chosen by the poet?
The poet intercepted several common scenes in his motherland that moved him.
It is these ordinary scenery that evoke the poet's "love" for the motherland during his vigil day and night.
Teaching summary
In the poem, the patriotism expressed by the poet is mainly expressed by describing the Russian night and people's activities in the night. What are the pros of writing in this manner? Talk about your opinions.
Seeing the truth in the ordinary
The poet describes the scenery of the Russian wilderness in a plain tone, and also describes in detail his feelings of traveling in the wilderness at night, as well as the scenes of joy with the farmers. The poet did not use a fierce and high-spirited tone to directly express his love for the motherland, but only allowed his emotions to be slowly released in ordinary life. In the description of the wilderness scenery and farm life, we can feel the poet's deep love for the Russian motherland everywhere. This love is real and the most authentic.

About the Author
Langston Hughes is the "Poet Laureate of Harlem" and the best representative of African American literature. His works are mainly poems, but also novels and reviews. Most of the themes he wrote were black lives and racial issues, which opened up a path of realism for black literature. He has published poetry collections such as "Sleepy Blues" and "Beautiful Clothes for the Jews".
Black people are a race with a long history. Among the several existing human races, black people were the first to leave their footprints on the earth. However, in modern history, the land where black people lived was invaded by colonial rulers. Many black people were turned into slaves and sold to the Americas to do hard manual labor. They were physically and mentally bullied. After the Civil War, slavery was abolished in the United States and blacks gained freedom.
“My soul became as deep as a river.”
There is only this line in the second stanza, and its function is to connect the previous and the following. In the previous section, the understanding of the river was limited to "understanding", but in this section, "I" have deeply felt the river with my "soul". In other words, the "soul" of black people is deepened by witnessing the "river" (history). The following section is a historical review starting from this point.
"I bathe in the Euphrates in the morning light."
The Euphrates River is one of the birthplaces of ancient civilization, and splendid ancient civilizations were born here.
"I built a hut on the banks of the Congo River,
The gurgling water of the river lulls me to sleep.
I looked down upon the Nile and built the pyramids on its banks. "
The Congo River is the largest river in Africa and the Nile River is the longest river in the world. The Nile River Basin also gave birth to splendid ancient civilizations.
Teaching summary:
This poem shows the pride black people have in their race. In the era when the poet lived, the bad habit of racial discrimination has not yet been eradicated in the United States. The poet wrote such a poem on behalf of his own race, which undoubtedly has a strong appeal.
In addition, we can also feel the poet's faint sadness from this poem. This sadness stems from the long history and deep suffering of black people.
Operation:
1. Compare the two poems and understand the different artistic characteristics of the poems.
2. Collect some poems about patriotism after class and try to appreciate them.
