Part I: Types, development and functions of maps

Commonly used maps: political maps, topographic maps, highway traffic maps, urban traffic tourism maps, electronic maps.

Three elements of a map: scale, direction, and legend

Concept: Indicates the degree to which the distance on the map is smaller than the distance on the ground

Map directions: east, south, west, north, northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest.

How to determine map direction:

1. General orientation method: up, north, down, south, left, west, right, east.

2. Pointing method: The pointing beacon points to the North Pole.

3. The graticule orientation method: According to the graticule, the meridians point to north and south, and the latitude lines point to east and west.

Map PPT, part 2: other orientation methods in nature

1. Orient according to the sun and clock.

Generally speaking, in the mid-to-high latitudes of the northern hemisphere, if you lay the watch flat and point the hour hand toward the sun, the bisector of the angle between the hour hand and 12 o'clock on the dial points roughly to the south.

2. Orient according to the crown and tree rings.

In the northern hemisphere, trees grow faster on the sunny side (south side) and have sparse annual rings on their stumps; trees on the backside (northern side) have denser annual rings. By the same token, judging from the appearance of a single plant, the branches and leaves on the south side are lusher, while the leaves on the north side are sparse and the bark is rough.

3. Orient according to the North Star.

In the northern hemisphere, draw a line connecting the two stars on the spoon edge of the Ursa Major constellation. At the other end, which is about five times the distance between the two stars, is the bright Polar Star. People face the North Star, with true north directly in front of them.

4. Orient according to terrain and features.

In the northern hemisphere, the vegetation growing on the southern slopes of mountains is generally more lush than on the northern slopes. The north side of the rock is covered with moss due to the humidity in the back. The doors of houses in mountainous areas and rural areas generally open to the south.
