Algae plants are diverse. There are single-celled ones (Chlamydomonas) and multi-celled ones (Spiroga). Algae are distributed almost everywhere in nature, mainly growing in water (freshwater or seawater). But they are also found on wet rocks, on walls and tree trunks, on the soil surface and below. Some of the algae living in the water float in the water, while others are fixed on rocks or attached to other plants in the water. Chlamydomonas and Spirogyra live in fresh water.

Algae plants generally have pigments (chlorophyll, carotenoids) for photosynthesis. The photosynthetic efficiency of algae accounts for about 90% of the photosynthetic efficiency of green plants in the world. They are the lowest form of green plants.
