Why can magnets attract iron?

Most matter is composed of molecules, which are composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of nuclei and electrons. Inside an atom, electrons are constantly spinning and orbiting the nucleus. Both movements of electrons produce magnetism. But in most materials, electrons move in different and chaotic directions, and the magnetic effects cancel each other out. Therefore, most substances are not magnetic under normal circumstances.

Ferromagnetic materials such as iron, cobalt, nickel or ferrite are different. The electron spins inside them can spontaneously arrange themselves in a small range to form a spontaneous magnetization area. This spontaneous magnetization area is called a magnetic domain. After ferromagnetic substances are magnetized, the internal magnetic domains are arranged neatly and in the same direction, which strengthens the magnetism and forms a magnet. The process of attracting iron by a magnet is the process of magnetizing the iron block. The magnetized iron block and the different polarities of the magnet generate attractive forces, and the iron block "sticks" to the magnet. Let's just say that magnets are magnetic.

There are many substances that are also affected by strong magnetic forces, although not as significantly as iron. Among metals, nickel, cobalt, manganese, platinum, gold, silver, and aluminum can all be attracted by magnets, but the attraction force is relatively small. There are also some so-called diamagnetic substances, such as zinc, lead, sulfur, and bismuth, which have particularly special properties: they can be repelled by powerful magnets.

Liquids and gases also have the property of being attracted or repelled by magnets, but the effect is very weak, and a very powerful magnet is required to show its effect on these substances. For example, pure oxygen is paramagnetic, that is, magnets can attract it. If we fill a soap bubble with oxygen and then place it between the two poles of a powerful electromagnet, the soap bubble will be pulled by the invisible magnetic force and stretch between the two poles. A candle placed between the poles of a powerful magnet changes its usual shape, telling us evidently its susceptibility to magnetic forces.
