Ji Xianlin was born in Linqing, Shandong in 1911. He graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages of Tsinghua University in 1934. He received a doctorate in philosophy and is proficient in 12 languages. In 1946, he returned to China and worked as a professor in the Department of Oriental Languages at Peking University. He has conducted in-depth research on ancient Indian languages, Indian classical literature, the history of Indian Buddhism, and Sino-Indian cultural relations. He has written extensively, including "Historical Treatise on Sino-Indian Cultural Relations", "An Investigation of Ramayana", "The Great "Records of the Western Regions of the Tang Dynasty" (Co-author), translated "Sakuntala", "Five Volumes", "Ramayana", etc. At 8:50 Beijing time on July 11, 2009, Ji Xianlin, a master of traditional Chinese culture, died of illness in Beijing 301 Hospital at the age of 98.
