Liangzhou Ci

The Yellow River is far up among the white clouds,

An isolated city in Wanren Mountain.

The author of this poem is Wang Zhihuan, a poet from the Tang Dynasty. Wang Zhihuan, whose courtesy name was Ji Ling, was from Jinyang, Bingzhou, which is now Taiyuan, Shanxi. He once served as a minor official such as County Wei. Because he was framed, he once abandoned his official position and wandered around. He was a famous frontier poet during the prosperous Tang Dynasty and had a good relationship with Gao Shi and Wang Changling. His poems were "paging music and spreading among the people" at that time. It is a pity that only six quatrains have been handed down to this day, but these six are all passionate masterpieces.

Liangzhou Ci, this is a tune of ancient Yuefu folk songs. "During the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, Guo Zhiyun, the governor of Longyou, collected a batch of music scores from the Western Regions and presented them to Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. Xuanzong gave them to Jiaofang to translate them into Chinese music scores, and sung them with new lyrics. The names of these music scores were named after the places where they were produced. The name of the tune. Later, many poets liked this tune and filled in new words for it. Therefore, many poets in the Tang Dynasty wrote "Liangzhou Ci".

On the vast plateau, the Yellow River rushes forward. Looking far to the west, it looks like a ribbon flying up into the clouds.

"A lonely city in Wanren Mountain"

A lonely city refers to a lonely city, namely Yumen Pass. Wanrenshan refers to a very high mountain. Ren is an ancient unit of length. In ancient times, one Ren was seven feet or eight feet.

The meaning of this poem is: Nearby, there is a lonely castle under the high mountain.

"Why should the Qiang flute blame the willows?"

Qiang flute refers to the flute of the Qiang people, here it refers to the sound of the Qiang flute. Why need, means why need. Willow, here refers to the name of an ancient song "Folding Willow", which expresses the emotions of parting. In the Tang Dynasty, there was a custom of breaking willows and giving them to each other when parting.

The meaning of this poem is: Why does the Qiang flute play such a sad and miserable tune as "Breaking Willows"?
