Exploring Languages Around the World
To some students, it seems that the only foreign language to learn is English. There are, however, nearly 7,000 languages in the world. After Chinese, the language with the most native language speakers isn’t English—it’s Spanish. Learning English is very useful, but it is wise to learn at least one other foreign language, if possible.
There are many reasons why people learn a foreign language. Many students choose to study one of the languages that are spoken at the UN. As they think it means better job chances in the future. The UN has six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. They are spoken by around 2.8 billion people as their native or second language.
Ⅱ Listen to the speech again and answer the questions.

Listening Tips
1. Attention to detail
Before listening to the text, look through the exercises quickly and find out the key points according to the exercises.
2. Skillfully judge character relationships, identities and careers
Listening questions on relationships, occupations, identities and other related aspects require reasoning and judgment about the identity of the speaker in a specific environment. Most of the tests on this content are special questions starting with who or what. The common question methods are:
What is the man (woman)?
What’s the man’s (woman’s) occupation?
Who is the man speaker?
What’s the probable relationship between the two speakers?
In addition, we can make judgments based on the terms of address provided in the conversation and common sense in life. At the same time, being familiar with specific scene terms and keywords will help us better answer questions about the relationship between characters and the place where the dialogue takes place.
