"Language in use" Summer in Los Angeles PPT courseware 2

Objectives:

1. To summarize and practice the use of composite sentences with and, but, or

2. To summarize and consolidate new vocabulary

It is recommended to use an inductive approach when explaining grammar, such as presenting as many relevant examples as possible, or allowing students to find corresponding examples from texts they have learned, and guiding students to try to summarize grammatical rules from the observed language phenomena.

Observe

Are you familiar with these sentences? They are all from this module.

Have students read aloud the parallel compound sentences learned in this module, and then take a small test.

1. When are you leaving and how long are you going to stay there?

2. It sounds crazy, but I don’t know what to take.

3. Shorts are good, or you can wear light trousers.

4. I’m leaving at the end of July and I’m going to stay there for four weeks.

5. You can choose to take trips to Hollywood, Disneyland or San Francisco, or you can go shopping.

Grammar

Parallel compound sentence

A parallel compound sentence refers to a sentence formed by connecting two or more simple sentences together with the coordinating conjunctions and, but, or, etc.

1. Basic structure:

Simple sentence + coordinating conjunction + simple sentence.

I help him and he helps me.

He is very old but he is in good health.

You can stay here, or you can leave.

2. The relationship between the simple sentences before and after the coordinating conjunction.

(1) Parallel relationship

They are watching TV, and the others are listening to the radio.

(2) Select relationship

The children can go with us, or they can stay at home.

(3) Turning relationship

She was tired, but she did not stop working.

Notice:

(1) Parallel compound sentences sometimes do not need conjunctions but are separated by semicolons (the relationship between the preceding and following sentences must be quite close). For example:

We fished all day; we did not catch a single fish.

We fished all day; but didn't catch a single fish.

(2) If the simple sentence after the coordinating conjunction has the same parts as the previous simple sentence, the same parts can be omitted. For example:

Snoopy lives in his own world and (Snoopy) finds real life hard to understand.

Snoopy lives in his own world and finds real life difficult to understand.

After explaining the parallel compound sentences, practice questions 1 and 2 on page 60 of the textbook.

After finishing, the group will check the answers and the teacher will comment appropriately.

Join the two parts of the sentences with and, but or or.

1 I would like to go to England…

2 You should wear a raincoat…

3 You can go by plane…

4 I did not bring my sunglasses…

5 I have bought my ticket…

6 You can take two bags…
