Adverbial Clauses

Adverbial Clauses

In a complex sentence, if the adverbial modifier is a subordinate clause, it is called an adverbial clause. The type of adverbial clause depends on the adverbial modifier. Adverbial clauses can express time, place, cause, condition, purpose, result, concession, comparison and method, etc. A subordinate clause is used to express the time when an event or an action occurs, and this clause is called a time adverbial clause.

Many time adverbial clauses are caused by conjunctions:

When we lived in town we often went to the theatre.

After she got married, she changed completely.

We must strike while the iron is hot.

It was a long time before I got to sleep again.

As the sun rose the fog dispersed.

Tell him as soon as he arrives.

There are also some time clauses that are not introduced by conjunctions:
