Grammar

Present continuous tense (I)

1. Definition: Indicates the action that is taking place now (at the moment of speaking).

He is watching TV now.

He is drinking a glass of water.

It can also represent activities within the current period of time or ongoing actions at this stage.

We are working on a farm these days.

I am writing a book this year.

2. The formation of predicate verb: auxiliary verb be + V-ing.

Please pay attention to the observation that be changes with the change of person and number (am, is, are three forms).

I’m visiting my friend.

He is eating an ice cream.

We’re preparing for Spring Festival.

They are lying in the sun.

Note: V.-ing or be+V base form without the auxiliary verb be cannot form the present continuous tense. like:

He visiting his friend. (×)

He is visiting his friend.（×）

Exercise: Sentence conversion.

1. She is watching a ballet. (change to negative sentence)

She isn’t watching a ballet.

2. We’re waiting for our teacher. (change into general question)

Are you waiting for your teacher?

3. Is Tony calling a friend? (An affirmative question)

Yes, he is.

4. They are lying in the sun. (underline question)
