Objective:

To learn the usage of past simple (1)

It is recommended to use the inductive method for grammar explanation, such as presenting as many relevant examples as possible, or asking students to find corresponding examples from the texts they have learned, and guiding students to try to summarize grammatical rules from the language phenomena they have observed.

Example sentences in this unit:

I was born in Quincy.

My first teacher was Mrs Lane.

I wasn’t bored in Quincy.

Where were you born?

One of the biggest differences between English tenses is the change of verbs. Compare:

This year is 2013. The twins are 4 years old.

Last year was 2012. The twins were 3 years old.

Next year will be 2014. The twins will be 5 years old.

The year is 2013. The twins are 4 years old.

Last year was 2012. The twins were 3 years old.

Next year is 2014. The twins will be 5 years old.

From the examples, we can see that the past tense of the verb be in English is ____, _____. Today we will talk about the past tense of the verb be.

Grammar

Simple past tense I (be verb)

If the subject is the first person singular or the third person singular, the verb is was; if the subject is the second person or other plural person, the verb is were. For example:

He was in a bank a moment ago.

He was in the bank just now.

They were at KTV last night.

They were in KTV last night.

You were at home yesterday.

You were at home yesterday.

Negative Sentences

After was/were, add not to make it a negative sentence.

Tom and Li Ming were not (=weren’t) in the classroom just now.

Tom and Li Ming were not in the classroom just now.

He was not (=wasn’t) in Chengdu last year.

He was not in Chengdu last year.

I wasn’t in Grade Six last year.

I wasn't in 6th grade last year.

Tony wasn’t a teacher two years ago.

Tony was not a teacher two years ago.
