Description
"Language in use" Body language PPT courseware 2
Objective
To learn to use Imperatives to express your attitude
It is recommended to use an inductive method when explaining grammar, such as presenting as many relevant examples as possible, or allowing students to find corresponding examples from texts they have learned, and guiding students to try to summarize language rules and grammar rules from the observed language phenomena.
Have A Look
In this module we are exposed to these sentences:
Don’t stand too close to North Americans.
Give them more personal space.
Be careful!
Wave to say goodbye.
These sentences in the text are called imperative sentences.
Imperative sentences are used to express exhortations, advices, hopes, prohibitions, warnings, requests or commands. Imperative sentences are most commonly used to express commands.
Go and wash your hands.
Go wash your hands. (Order)
Be quiet, please.
Please be quiet. (ask)
Be kind to our sister.
Be kind to our sisters. (advice)
Watch your steps.
Walk carefully. (warn)
No littering.
Do not litter. (prohibit)
Don’t forget to take an umbrella.
Don't forget to bring an umbrella. (advice)
Please carefully observe the above imperative sentence and then describe the characteristics of the imperative sentence:
◇Imperative sentences generally do not have a subject, and the person speaking is always the second person "you" or "you", so it can also be understood as omitting the subject you.
◇ Begin with the base form of the verb, without changes in tense or number.
◇ The negative form of an imperative sentence is to add don’t before the original form of the verb.
◇ When expressing a request, you can add please; when expressing a stronger tone, you can use an exclamation point.
More examples:
Please close the door.
Please close the door.
Sit down, please.
Please take a seat.
