Past progressive
Basic concept: Past continuous tense indicates an action that was performed or occurred at a certain moment or period in the past.
basic structure
Subject + was/were + doing + other content
Note: doing is the present participle, and its word form changes the same as the present continuous tense.
Commonly used time adverbials:
this morning, the whole morning,
all day yesterday, from nine to ten last
evening, when, while , at that time,
just now
Common sentence patterns
Affirmative:
Subject + was/were + doing + others
Negative Sentences:
Subject + was/were + not + doing + other
General questions:
Was/Were + subject + doing + other
Special questions:
Special question word + was/were + subject + doing + other
usage:
1. The basic usage of the past continuous tense is mainly to express an action that was in progress at a certain time in the past. For example:
He fell asleep when he was reading.
He fell asleep while reading.
2. The past continuous tense is used to express the present moment mainly to make the tone euphemistic and polite. For example:
I was wondering if you could give me a lift.
I wonder if you could give me a ride
【Note】The past tense has a similar usage, but the past continuous tense is more polite and less sure. Could you give me a ride?
3. The past continuous tense is similar to the present continuous tense in expressing emotions. It can also express emotions such as satisfaction, praise, surprise, disgust, etc. It is also often used with adverbs such as always, forever, continually, etc. For example:
They were always quarrelling.
They quarrel all the time.
The difference between simple past tense and past continuous tense
1. Past tense often indicates that an action has been completed, while past continuous tense indicates that the action is continuing or unfinished.
Compare:
She wrote a letter to her friend last night.
She wrote a letter to her friend last night. (The letter is finished)
She was writing a letter to her friend last night. (The letter may not be finished)
2. The simple past tense indicates an action that is done only once, while the past continuous tense indicates an action that is done repeatedly.
like:
She waved to me.
She waved at me.
She was waving to me.
She kept waving at me.
Classic example
1) Mary ___ a dress when she cut her finger.
A. made B. is making
C. was making D. makes
Answer C. Cutting the finger is something that has already happened, so the past tense should be used. At the same time, when indicates the simultaneity of time, and "when Mary was making clothes" provides the background of what happened, so the past continuous tense should be used.
2) As she ___ the newspaper, Granny ___ asleep.
A. read; was falling
B. was reading; fell
C. was reading; was falling
D. read; fell
Answer B. In the sentence, as = when, while means "when...". When describing the background of an event, use the past continuous;
When a long action occurs, another short action occurs. The sentence means "Grandma fell asleep while she was reading the newspaper." In the sentence, fell (the past tense of fall) is a linking verb, followed by an adjective.
Such as: fall sick.
