The difference between when and while
(1) When and while both mean "when...". When can represent a certain point in time or a certain period of time.
In the time adverbial clause introduced by when, the predicate verb can be continuous or non-continuous, and can occur simultaneously with the predicate verb in the main clause or after it. like:
I was just reading a book when she came into my room.
I was reading a book when she came into my room.

(2) while can only represent a certain period of time, not a certain point in time. In the time adverbial clause introduced by while, its predicate verb can only be continuous, and it can only occur or exist at the same time as the predicate verb in the main clause. like:

While Jim was repairing his bicycle, Lin Tao came to see him.
You can’t do your homework while you’re watching TV.
You can't watch TV and do your homework at the same time.
(3) The difference between when and while is that the time adverbial clauses introduced by while are mostly in the progressive tense, while the time adverbial clauses introduced by when are mostly in the common tense. like:
While they were talking, the bell rang.
While they were talking, the school bell rang.
I was doing my homework when my mother came back home yesterday evening.
Last night when my mother came home, I was doing homework.
