Part One: Introduction of New Course
Ji Yun (June 1724-February 1805), courtesy name Xiaolan, was a writer in the Qing Dynasty. A native of Hejian Prefecture in Zhili Province (now Xianxian County, Hebei Province), he lived through the Yongzheng, Qianlong and Jiaqing dynasties. He was 82 years old.
He began to study at the age of four, and went to Beijing with his father at the age of eleven. He became a scholar at the age of twenty-one, and passed the Jinshi examination at the age of thirty-one. He became a minister of the Ministry of Rites and co-organizer of the bachelor's degree. He once served as the chief editor of "Sikuquanshu" and wrote "Summary of the General Catalog of the Complete Library Siku". Because he was "smart and eager to learn, he could write essays, and he could do anything in politics if taught" (an inscription given by Emperor Jiaqing), so he was given the posthumous title Wenda after his death, and was known as Wenda Gong in his hometown. His representative work is "Notes of Yuewei Thatched Cottage".
Ji Xiaolan's talents and academic achievements were very outstanding throughout his life. He once wrote a poem to himself, two sentences of which are: "The ups and downs of officialdom are like gulls and birds, and the fountain of youth is the book of life and death." Ji Xiaolan was recognized as a literary figure, an academic leader, and a literary master in the Qing Dynasty. He was a cultural giant in the cultural history of China and the world. Throughout his life, he was witty, funny, quick-witted, and talented. He left many funny words to future generations and was known as a "romantic talent" and a "humor master." He was a famous scholar, poet, bibliographer and novelist in the Qing Dynasty.
