Description
"Innate Behavior and Learned Behavior" Animal Movement and Behavior PPT Courseware 7
Review the past and learn the new:
1. The concept of animal behavior
Activities performed by animals that help them survive and reproduce
2. Composition of the motion system
3. The relationship between bones, joints and muscles
Feeding behavior: refers to the behavior of obtaining food needed for survival through unique methods.
Defensive behavior: refers to the behavior that occurs when animals deal with external aggression, defend their own survival, or alert other individuals in the population.
Reproductive behavior: refers to behaviors related to animal reproduction.
Story introduction:
A newborn puppy came to a strange owner's house. It was a little afraid of people at first and would only eat and sleep obediently. Later, after being trained by its owner, it learned to poop and pee in designated places, and also learned simple addition and subtraction. It often performed shows in front of guests! Therefore, the owner of the house loved it very much, served him delicious food every meal, and even praised him for being smart.
Think about it and discuss it:
1. Will puppies eat and sleep when they are born?
2. Will puppies go to designated places to poop and pee when they are born?
3. Will puppies be able to do simple addition and subtraction from birth?
4.Are these three behaviors the same? What kinds of behaviors are the same?
5. Why are the former and the latter two different?
1. Innate sexual behavior
Concept: Behavior that animals are born with and determined by the genetic material in their bodies.
Examples: gray magpies feeding cuckoos, bees collecting nectar, birds brooding, dragonflies mating, spiders building webs
2. Learning behavior
Concept: It is not something animals are born with, but a behavior acquired through life experience and learning based on genetic factors, through the action of environmental factors, and through life experience.
Examples: the learning behavior of earthworms, tits eating butter, and orangutans taking bananas.
What are the differences between innate and learned behaviors in terms of survival for animals?
Innate sexual behaviors in animals are often simple behaviors that are essential at birth. Learning behavior is an important guarantee for animals to continuously adapt to changing environments and survive and reproduce better. The more complex and changeable an animal's living environment is, the more behaviors it needs to learn. Animal learning behavior is a more advanced behavior than innate behavior
Think about it: What behaviors are shown in the above picture? What are the limitations of innate sexual behavior compared to American cardinals and great tits?
Comparing the above two pictures, we can see that innate sexual behavior has great limitations. Although the behavior of the cardinal bird feeding fish is instinctive, this is a waste for the cardinal because the fish it feeds have no significance for the continuation of the species; from another perspective, no animal can rely on Parents feed it throughout its life. If an organism only has innate behavior and no learned behavior throughout its life, this organism will be eliminated by nature because it cannot find food or cannot escape enemies. Research has found that even the lowest protozoan in the animal kingdom, Paramecium, has the ability to learn.
Innate behavior or learned behavior?
1. The baby's lips touch the mother's nipple and start sucking.
2. The chaffinch incubates the eggs for the cuckoo and feeds the young cuckoos.
3. After the chick hatches, the cat will be by its side.
4. When your hand touches the hot pot, retract it immediately.
5. Hearing the footsteps of the breeder, the chicken ran over
6. A moth flies into the flame, "dying for the light."
7. Which of the following items belongs to congenital behavior ( )
A. The lion show in the circus B. The mouse burrowing
C. Puppies do arithmetic D. Earthworms run mazes
Example of research plan: Research on the feeding behavior of cabbage caterpillars
1. Raise the question: Is the feeding behavior of cabbage caterpillar an innate behavior?
2. Make a hypothesis: The feeding behavior of cabbage caterpillars is an innate behavior.
3. Develop and implement plans:
(1) Look for leaves with cabbage caterpillar eggs, isolate and raise the eggs, and hatch out larvae.
(2) Extract the juice from the leaves of cruciferous plants and apply the juice on a small piece of filter paper (the filter paper should be dyed the same color as the leaves before applying the juice).
(3) Prepare a mint leaf or celery leaf (blank filter paper can also be used) that is the same size as the filter paper coated with juice, and then place the two on the same straight line.
(4) After starving the larvae for a period of time, place it at an equal distance from the filter paper and leaves coated with juice.
(5) Pay attention to observation and recording to see which end the larvae will crawl to to feed.
Class exercises:
1. The following animal behaviors are not learned behaviors ( )
A. Monkey shows riding a bicycle B. Chimpanzee imitates feeding on termites
C. The hen who lost her chick caressed the kitten D. The earthworm walked through the "T" shaped maze
2. Among the following phenomena, which one belongs to innate behavior ( )
A. The dog ran away when it saw a person raising a stick. B. The parrot said "Hello" to the guest.
C. The monkey stroller at the zoo D. The cardinal that lost its chick feeds the goldfish
3. Which statement about the web-weaving behavior of spiders is incorrect ( )
A. It is an innate instinct B. Behavior determined by the genetic material in the body
C. It is an innate behavior D. The little spider learned it from the big spider
4. Among the following animals, the one with the strongest learning ability is ( )
A. Earthworm B. Frog C. Locust D. Chimpanzee
5. Which of the following does not belong to congenital behavior ( )
A. Birds build nests B. Hens hatch eggs C. Roosters croak D. Great tits secretly drink milk
After class notes
The content of this lesson is simple. Most students can judge which behaviors are learned behaviors and which behaviors are innate behaviors. For those ambiguous behaviors, a few students will make mistakes. In addition, most students cannot judge from the means and purposes of acquisition. What the behavior is, the classification criteria of the behavior should be emphasized.
