Ai Qing resume:
Born in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province in 1910, his original name was Jiang Zhenghan, with the courtesy name Yangyuan and the nickname Haicheng.
He went to Paris in 1929 and returned to China in 1932. He was sentenced to six years in prison for joining the "Left-wing Artists Alliance".
He was released from prison early in 1935 and joined the anti-Japanese war.
Classified as a "rightist" in 1957, he was sent to Beidahuang in 1958, went to Xinjiang in 1959, and was rehabilitated in 1978.
Time backgroud
This is a famous poem widely read in the history of modern poetry. In 1938, the early days of the Anti-Japanese War, the Japanese aggressors successively captured vast areas of North China, East China, and South China, wreaking havoc wherever they went in an attempt to destroy the Chinese people's will to resist Japan. The Chinese people rose up in resistance and carried out an indomitable struggle. At a time when the country was in ruins and the nation was in danger, the poet wrote this impassioned poem full of deep love for the motherland and hatred for the invaders.
Pay attention to pauses when reading poetry. Please read aloud according to the pause below.
If/I were a bird,
I should also sing/sing with a hoarse throat:
This storm-beaten land,
This ever-raging river of our sorrow and indignation
This ceaseless / blowing / angry / wind,
And the / extremely gentle / dawn from the forest...
——Then/I died,
Even the feathers rot in the earth.
writing background:
"I Love This Land" was written in November 1938, when the country was in crisis, and the vicissitudes of the motherland was once again trampled by the iron hoofs of the Japanese invaders. As a poet, Ai Qing firmly joined the torrent of the national liberation struggle and became the "trumpet blower" of the times. He said that he "wrote poetry as a singer of a miserable race striving for liberation and throwing off their shackles."
taste, appreciation
1. How many distinct poetic images did you choose to write in the whole poem? The poet has given these images unique symbolic meanings. Please discuss what each image symbolizes?
2. In the poem, he compares himself to a bird and writes about the life and death of the bird. What feelings does the author express? Why do birds sing with "hoarse throats"?
What is the image of the "bird" that "sings with a hoarse throat" in the poem?
This "bird" sang until it died, and in the end "even its feathers rotted in the ground." How should we understand this?
Bird - person, author
Singing (singing the land, the rivers, the wind and the dawn, throwing oneself into the embrace of the land after the life is spent, becoming one with the land it loves) - the determination to give everything for the motherland.
What is the symbolic meaning of "land"?
Land - Motherland.
This land is battered by storms - a land that is being bullied by the Japanese invaders.
How is the second section related to the first section?
Section 1: Explanation of the themes of “Love the Land” and “Love the Motherland”
Section 2: Summary of the topic.
In the sentence "singing with a hoarse throat", what emotion does "hoarse" express the author's feelings? Is it okay to use "loud"? Why?
"Hoarse" expresses the endless singing and infinite true feelings. Even if the throat is congested and the voice is hoarse, and the sadness of facing difficulties and struggles, the song will not stop singing to the earth. If "loud" is used, although it adds bright color, it lacks hardship and weakens the expression of sincere feelings for the earth. Therefore, it is better to use "hoarse" than "loud".
