There are three common situations when adding ing after a verb:

(1) Add directly after the verb, such as collect→collecting, play→playing, etc.;

(2) Remove the last silent letter e from the verb and add ing, such as: ride→riding, dive→diving, etc.;

(3) Stress the ending of the closed syllable, double the last letter of the verb, and then add ing, such as:

swim→swimming, run→running, etc.
