"Heroic Soul of the Sea" PPT courseware 2
Deng Shichang (1849-1894.9.17) was a patriotic general of the Beiyang Navy in the late Qing Dynasty. The courtesy name is Zhengqing, a native of Panyu, Guangdong. When he was a boy, he witnessed the warships of Western powers operating rampantly in China's waters and determined to dedicate himself to defending the waters. In 1867 (the sixth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty), he was admitted to the Fujian Shipping Bureau School to learn ship driving. In 1871, he boarded the "Jianwei" training ship to practice navigation and went as far as the Bohai Bay and ports in Singapore and Penang Island in Southeast Asia. Later, he successively served as the commander of ships such as "Haidongyun", "Zhenwei" and "Feiting". In 1879 (the fifth year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty), he was transferred to the Beiyang Navy. In January 1881, he went to the United Kingdom to receive the ordered warships. He drove the cruiser "Yangwei" back to China through the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, and then became the commander of the ship. In 1887, he went to the UK again with the rank of staff commander and returned to China on the cruiser "Zhiyuan". In 1888, the Beiyang Navy was formed into an army, and he served as deputy general of the Chinese Army's Zhongying Camp and commander of the "Zhiyuan" ship. He is famous for his strict military management, loyalty, courage and uprightness. In the Battle of the Yellow Sea on September 17, 1894, he commanded the "Zhiyuan" warship to fight bravely. When the warship was severely damaged and rolled, it rammed into the flagship "Yoshino" of the first guerrilla force of the Japanese Combined Fleet at full speed, determined to die with it. Unfortunately, the torpedo tube was hit by the enemy, and the ship's hull burst and sank. Together with more than 200 officers and soldiers on the ship, they died heroically.
About the Sino-Japanese Sino-Japanese War
The Sino-Japanese Sino-Japanese Sino-Japanese War of 1894 (the 20th year of Guangxu, the year of Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1894) was caused by Japan's invasion of Korea and its provocation against China's navy and army. Although the Chinese people and patriotic officers and soldiers fought bravely, China failed due to the corruption of the Qing government. Finally, the Qing government sent Li Hongzhang to sign the shameful Treaty of Shimonoseki with Japan.
