Learn about impatiens

Other names of Impatiens: Nail Grass, Dioscorea, Goldilocks, and Golden Flower. Because its flower head, wings, tail, and feet are all upturned like a phoenix, it is also called Goldilocks.

Impatiens is an annual herbaceous flower of the family Impatiens, native to China and India. Impatiens flower stems are 40-100 cm tall.

Sowing is carried out from March to September, with April being the most suitable. Transplanting can be done at any time. The growing period is from April to September. After the seeds are sown in the pot, they usually sprout and grow leaves in about a week.

Impatiens like sunshine, are afraid of moisture, are heat-resistant but not cold-tolerant, and are suitable for growing in loose, fertile and slightly acidic soil.

Its flowers are shaped like butterflies and come in pink, red, purple, white and yellow, gold, etc., which are easy to change. Some varieties can have flowers of several colors on the same plant.

1. Selection of species

Choose seeds that are plump and undamaged.

2. Flower pots and soil

Choose a suitable flower pot and place a small tile on the water outlet of the flower pot.

Do you know the function of covering with small tiles?

What are the requirements for soil selection?

(loose, fertile, slightly acidic)

How much soil should be put in?

3. Sowing

Use your fingers to make 2 to 3 small holes in the soil, about 1 cm deep. Place 1 impatiens seed in each small hole and cover it with soil.

4. Watering

Pour enough water into the pot to moisten the soil and place it in a warm place.

A little tip

Start applying liquid fertilizer after 10 days and apply it every other week.

After planting, the main stem of the plant needs to be topped to enhance its branching ability;

Remove the flowers at the base at any time, which will encourage the tops of each branch to bloom one after another.

Why do seeds sometimes fail to germinate even after they are planted?

(1) The seeds are in a dormant state, and no artificial treatment is taken to destroy their dormancy during sowing. Some seeds require low temperatures or sand storage to break dormancy.

(2) When the seeds are sown, the soil is too thick or the matrix particles are too large, causing the seeds to be compressed and unable to "raise their heads", and rot in the soil that is too wet.

(3) The seeds become damp, moldy, insect-eaten, or damaged during sowing.

(4) The seeds are left too long beyond the germination period. The time it takes for a seed to fully mature and lose its vitality is the life span of the seed. The seed life of different plants is different. For example, the seed life of wheat and rice is 2 years, while the seed life of water lily can be hundreds of years, and the seed life of Brazilian rubber is only 1 week. The life span of seeds is also related to seed storage conditions. For example, wheat can last up to 10 years in dry and low temperature conditions.

(5) There is something wrong with the seeds themselves, such as not being fertilized and the seeds being harvested when they are immature.

think about it

After the seeds are planted, what should we do to see the changes in them?

1. Place several layers of paper on the inner wall of a transparent glass, add some soil, and make the paper towel stick to the wall of the cup.

2. Place the impatiens seeds between the cup wall and the paper (place the seeds in different directions).

3. Pour an appropriate amount of water into the soil and do not let the seeds soak in the water.
