Part One: Getting closer to the author

Ma Zhiyuan, nicknamed Dongli, was from Dadu (now Beijing). A famous Sanqu writer in the Yuan Dynasty. He wrote a total of 15 kinds of dramas in his life, such as "Autumn in the Han Palace", "Tears on a Green Shirt", "Recommended Blessing Tablet", "Yueyang Tower", "Ma Danyang" and "Huangliang Dream". Together with Guan Hanqing, Zheng Guangzu and Bai Pu, he is known as one of the "Four Masters of Yuan Opera". He also wrote more than 200 small orders and sets, which were later compiled into "Dongli Yuefu". He ranked first among the Sanqu writers of the Yuan Dynasty.

Translation: Crows returning to their nests at dusk perch on the branches of old trees entangled with dead vines. The gurgling water under the bridge reflects the smoke of several households. On the desolate ancient road, a group of people walks in the bleak autumn wind. A lonely thin horse, the sunset has already set in the west, and the wanderer who has not returned is still far away in the world.

What kind of picture does this Sanqu depict? What kind of feelings are expressed? Please make a brief analysis according to the level of the article.

This little poem depicts a wonderful late autumn evening scene, and truly expresses the loneliness and sorrow of people who have fallen to the end of the world. Although the mood is lower, it reflects the dull atmosphere of the times and has certain social significance.

The whole article can be divided into two levels:

In the first level (the first three sentences), the author cleverly combines nine kinds of scenery: withered vines, old trees, dusky crows, small bridges, flowing water, people's houses, ancient roads, west wind, and thin horses to show people a picture of a wandering traveler.

The first three sentences all describe scenery, but each sentence also expresses the wanderer's sorrow and homesickness.

The sentence "Withered Vine" describes the scene of late autumn. The withered old vines, old trees and crows wailing create a bleak and desolate mood, implicitly expressing the feeling of homelessness.

The sentence "Little Bridge" introduces an elegant and tranquil picture, which is in sharp contrast with the previous sentence and arouses the wanderer's homesickness even more.

The sentence "ancient road" describes that the ancient road is desolate, the west wind blows suddenly, and the horses are tired and thin from the long journey, which reflects the loneliness of the travelers on the way.

The second level (four or five sentences) "the sunset" further points out the time. "The heartbroken man is at the end of the world" is a pen that illuminates the characters and expresses the feelings of the wanderer: the wanderer is far away from his hometown, wandering alone, the autumn scenery is desolate, and it is almost dusk. How can it not make people heartbroken! The first four sentences describe the scenery and try their best to exaggerate the sad atmosphere, all of which are foreshadowing.
